The Flag is an iconic design thought to be from the folk heroine Betsy Ross or an allustion to Jasper Johns but to me, the imperfectly stitched flag represents the desire for peace and unity. Each day is another day to mend the past, to ask forgiveness, and to shed light on the act of daily repairing and aiming for wholeness. To me the symbol of tearing was always the most important to me. The most visceral. Through the act of tearing and mending I feel I’m able to approach the gamut of grief and recovery we experience every day.
